WALKING FESTIVAL AMEIXIAL

On the trail for 2500 years...

The Festival

The Ameixial Walking Festival was the first walking festival to be organised in the Algarve and one of the first in Portugal, in the same spirit as similar festivals in other countries. It takes place every year on the last weekend in April, with the aim of promoting walking in the parish of Ameixial and showing the Algarve mountains and their natural, cultural and human heritage. It distinguishes itself by involving the local community in the scheduled activities, developing heritage preservation actions and generating an important direct economic return for the area.

The Festival’s identity is inspired by the theme of Escrita do Sudoeste (writing of Peninsula Ibérica southwest), a 2,500-year-old script with important remains in this area.

We're returning to Ameixial from 24 to 27 April 2025.

Check out the programme and discover the walks and all the other experiences we have prepared for you.

Where is it?

The Ameixial village is located in the heart of the Serra do Caldeirão, in the hinterland of Loulé municipality (Algarve), close to the border with Almodôvar municipality (Alentejo).

How to get there?

Coming from the north or south, the best reference is the National Road 2 (N2), which runs through the village.

Where to sleep?

Whether you're camping or staying in a rural tourism centre, there are several options for overnight stays in Ameixial during the festival.

Where to eat?

To discover the true flavours of the Algarve's hinterland, try the region's restaurants, snack bars and picnic parks.

The Cooperativa QRER experience in organising the WFA motivated the creation of the Algarve Walking Season (AWS), a project to jointly and articulately promote the calendar of Algarve Walking Festivals.

This brand is coordinated by QRER, with the support of the Algarve Tourism Board and the partnership of the festivals promoters network to valorise the territory's endogenous resources, including its culture, heritage, nature and local communities.
